IBS First Semester Sports Day a Success

The IBS community of students and staff of both the Saraga and Mt Eriama Campuses outplayed each other to the best of their ability to put on an entertaining and successful first semester sports day event yesterday.

As with IBS tradition and values of discipline and respect, the day was conducted in a very orderly manner with no reported misconduct to taint such a great event that was organized by the Students Representative Committee.

The day began with the official opening by IBSUniversity’s Vice Chancellor and CEO for IBS Group, Mr. Edward Silva, followed by a warm up session facilitated by the High Performance Sport PNG team. This set the tone for what was to be a hyper active day of sport and fun for all.

High Performance Sport PNG, who are always identifying and developing young talent in PNG, were special guests at this event. Through this collaboration in sport between the IBS Group of companies and HPSPNG, students now have more opportunities to develop their skills in sports.

The sports day showcased seven different sporting codes of which everyone had more than one chance to compete in multiple sports they were interested to play.

In the main arena that hosted the five sporting codes of soccer, touch rugby, mixed netball, mixed volleyball, chess and table tennis, the sun was merely an additional shine to the stunning skills displayed by students and staff. Whilst on the top field, basketball and a friendly cricket match was played.

Winding down towards the knock-outs for all codes, students managed to outplay most of the staff teams, giving a lesson in return that a thing or two could be learned from them too as students. It was exhilarating to see students compete with such high level of skills while displaying good sportsmanship.

The final results for the day saw students from the School of Information Technology (I.T) and School of Business Team 1 earn most of the top spots.

School of Business Team 1 in their royal blue uniforms proved they were the kings and queens of soccer by taking first place. In the game of Touch Rugby, it was the staff team in green aided by a handful of students that came out winners after the grand-final.

Basketball matches saw many classic plays from talented students who play basketball in town competitions or much bigger platforms, however at the end of the day, it was School of Accounting that came out as the stars for basketball. It was no different for Volleyball and Netball where both games were equally entertaining and full of energy.

School of Information Technology in their commanding red uniforms, showed they were a force to be reckoned with in the game of mixed netball and mixed volleyball. The mixed netball grand final drew a very vocal crowd of supporters, who in the end were a great adrenaline rush for the School of IT who became victors of the final match.

The Volleyball grand-final was no different as it showcased a handful of PNG’s national stars in the Red team of School of IT. Despite the threat, the School of Business Team 2 in white were not shaken. They put up a highly competitive match to the end however it was not enough to stop the commanding Reds of the School of IT. School of IT claimed the winning trophy and were all smiles to prove themselves as the best in volleyball.

In the much lesser physical sports of table tennis and chess, it was surprising to see the talent that students had in these less commonly played sports in PNG. In table-tennis, School of Business Team 1 were number one while in chess, also School of Business Team 1 were the better side.

President of the SRC Mr. Solomon Masamdu expressed great happiness in the staging of the event and commended his team for their efforts in taking the leadership role in the event.

“Students had put extra time over-night daily for almost two weeks to organize for this event and it is great to see that everyone enjoyed themselves today”, said Mr. Solomon when congratulated for his leadership in delivering the sports event.

Mr. Masamdu and his team aim to host another successful sports day for the second semester and to make it an even better one.

The SRC consists of an innovative group of young leaders mentored by their lecturers from both the Saraga and Mt Eriama Campus who collectively work towards ensuring an enjoyable academic life for students at the Institute of Business Studies and IBSUniversity.
